This one is about how data experts can enable greater FOCUS across an organization.

Data Scientists today are not focused on what they have been trained to do and the data science role did not pan out the way that we all envisioned it would ten years ago. When the data science buzzword began its meteoric rise in the early 2000s, we all envisioned a highly technical business expert that would be pumping out an endless stream of perfectly accurate market reports and data visualizations allowing executives to make more and improved data-driven decisions and attain superior insights faster than my competition. Instead, Data Scientists spend 80% of their time being “Data Janitors” and 20% of their time analyzing the data instead of the other way around.

Cleaning, preparing, harmonizing, and reformatting data distract anybody that needs to work with data from the primary functions of their job. Ideally, the right insights will be delivered to the right person at the right time to enable those data driven decisions thus providing a competitive or operational advantage.

Mckinsey’s digital transformation model is made up of five approaches:

  • Intelligent process automation
  • Lean process redesign
  • Business process outsourcing
  • Digitization
  • Advanced analytics

Firms looking to establish a sustainable competitive advantage should identify what the critical dependencies are to accomplish these five initiatives. The companies that I work with are usually in the infancy stages of digital transformation, prioritizing process redesign and then process outsourcing. The first step is to identify which processes are critical to the core competencies of the firm.

I see that one of the biggest challenges holding healthcare and Life Sciences organizations back from achieving these five capabilities is the lack of ability to integrate and manage data in real time from the myriad of different silos across different business units. Large organizations have traditionally turned to on-premise middleware solutions like they have always been accustomed to but the more forward thinking firms are shunning middleware and turning to a new trend in the industry called iPaaS (integration platform as a service).

Using a cloud-based solution along with Managed Services for integration and/or data management frees organizations to FOCUS their vital resources on improving their core competencies and strengthening their differentiators, while at the same time moving faster with partners and eliminating the risks associated with “citizen integrators” that are forced to maintain on-premise software and deal with compliance issues.

FOCUS is also top of mind as we consider National Health IT Week celebrations, which this year “focus” on recognizing the value of health IT and supporting healthcare transformation in delivery, quality of care and healthier communities. Regardless of whether your organization is a hospital or pharma, improvements in interoperability, quality, and innovation all start with insights that drive improved operations and the ability to FOCUS on the highest priorities of the organization.
